Healthy sweeteners And it’s benefits

As a mother I am always looking to find a way to make eating healthy and fun, there are endless list of things available in the market but either we do not know about them or are not sure if it’s beneficial or suitable for our needs or not. Hence today I thought of sharing a few sweet ingredients which I use daily to replace sugar in our favourite dishes.

Jaggery – Loved by generations

This is my all-time favourite sweetener, during my pregnancy whenever I had a craving for sweets and don’t have anything available at home, jaggery would come tomy rescue.
Also known as Gur, is made out of date palm sap or sugarcane, it’s boiled until it forms a thick liquid and is then cooled till it solidifies. This ingredient is used largely world wide in sweet as well as savoury dishes.
Jaggery is rich in antioxidants and minerals like zinc and selenium it’s health benefits include assistance in indigestion, lowering constipation, helping in bone development in children.
Many dishes like halwa, Sandesh, etc are made with this.

PALM CANDY – The underrated sweetener

Being born in a city which loves sweets like Sandesh, rosogolla and the famous mishti doi, makes you love all things sweet. Everyone in our family has a sweet tooth.
When I had my 1st daughter in 2017 I was very concerned about the what should I use for my daughter’s sweet tooth and then my mother, in-law introduced me to Palm candy which then became my go-to sweetener.
It has many different names like Tal Mishri in Bengal And Neera in south India.
Palm candy is a nutrient-rich, low-glycemic crystalline sweetener, it is processed from the molasses of palm juice extract. This nectar is then air-dried to form a crystalline sugar that’s naturally brown in colour, it is naturally rich in a number of key vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, including potassium, zinc, iron, and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6.
As it comes in a crystalline form, it needs to grinded before use, it can easily be done at home.
This powder can be used in making any variety of dishes like porridge, milk and other desserts.
This can be used instead of sugar, it’s a healthier option for you and your child.

Honey – The wonder sweetener

This needs no introduction, over the past few decades Honey has gained a lot of popularity, it is a sweet substance produced by honeybees.
It is rich in antioxidants and Anti-inflammatory which helps in digestion, honey is also known for building immunity, boosting energy and healing wounds faster.
This wonder product can be used both internally and externally, it is widely used in making beauty products and in medicines.
You can mix honey with warm water and consume every morning for a fresh start, honey also helps in regulating cold and cough in kids.

  1. Reminded me of my childhood! My mom used to make this for us, with ginger juice to cure sore throat! Very nice 🙂

  2. I’ve never heard of jaggery before, but it looks like such a great sweet treat! I’d love to try making it myself to give it a taste one of these days.

  4. I have never heard of Jaggery. I use honey all the time, love it! I have heard of palm sugar, but haven’t used it.

  5. I use honey as much as possible, but I’ve never heard of jaggery or palm candy. I love that palm candy is low glycemic–I’ll have to see where I can pick some up.
